Hospitality becomes visible precisely when it becomes inconvenient. Ògbè Òwónrín tells how Òrúnmìlà arrives in Ajase as the Oba's guest. As possessions from war fill the house, the Oba moves him from his room to the living area and finally outside, where rain soaks him. When things begin to go wrong inside the household, divination identifies the mistreatment. The Oba apologizes, invites Òrúnmìlà back and restores his place. Within the myth, the house itself reacts to a failure of hospitality. The modern question is simpler: what does our treatment of a guest reveal when their presence becomes inconvenient? An Òtúrúpọn Ìretè story describes a house held by a single support. When Elegua asks for food, the owner asks him to hold that support while he goes to fetch okra. Good ripe okra is close by, but the owner does not want to give the better pieces. He walks farther to find smaller ones. The delay becomes longer than the temporary support arrangement can bear, and the house is lost. The modern mechanism is local optimization. A team may save a little money, inventory, effort, or concession while a much more valuable system is sitting on temporary support: an expiring exception, borrowed capacity, a contractor waiting, a migration window, or an interim workaround. Before optimizing the small input, price the waiting dependency. If the support window is critical, the cheapest local choice can become the most expensive system choice.
